Academics at QEI
We utilize the Pearson curriculum for our core subjects, however, each teacher supplements the materials with North Carolina, as well as world-wide subject matter that may be lacking in the texts. We also use Abeka, the Christian based curriculum company to provide our students with a more broadened view of the world. Our school provides a superior quality education for students in Kindergarten through Fifth grade. Language arts, spelling, science, social studies, and math are key subjects in which the students excel. We also instruct students in additional co-curricular classes to enhance their holistic education. QEI is certified by the State of North Carolina as a private school. We test our students annually using the nationally accepted ITBS standardized test.
Progress Reports and Homework
The purpose of homework for all grades is for independent practice and reinforcement of new and reviewed concepts. Homework is expected to be completed nightly and returned the next school day, unless Teacher indicates another due date. Students are to complete their homework in their own handwriting. Homework should always be done neatly. The general time expectations for homework are:
- K4 - 30 minutes
- K5 - 45 minutes
- 1st and 2nd Grade - 30 minutes
- 3rd through 5th Grades - 1 hour
Parents are advised to read and sign off on daily communication log that goes home with their child(ren). The Daily Communication Log will record homework and Teachers will make comments for parents regarding student behavior.
At the end of each quarter a report card is sent to parents of children in the Kindergarten Five through Fifth grades. For Students at the Kindergarten Four (k-4) level, assessments are conducted daily for the mastery of material. In the Spring of the School year (May) a final assessment is given to determine the students' mastery of the materials taught throughout the year.
At the halfway point of each Academic Quarter, each Student is sent home with a progress report with samples of his/her work. Parents are expected to return the signed progress report to the teacher the following day. This is an excellent way for parents to assess their child's progress. The report cards and progress reports are designed to inform the Parent(s) of Students' participation and performance in school. Teachers are open to conversations with each Parent regarding his/her child's development at QEI. Please schedule an appointment, through email to your child's teacher.
Testing
At the beginning of each School Year, Students are tested to ascertain their academic performance level. New Students are tested during the first few weeks of their enrollment at QEI. This testing is designed to provide the Teaching Staff with information regarding the Students' academic strengths and weaknesses. At least annually, QEI students are assessed with the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. QEI Faculty and Staff have found that most children are eager to learn, and they are eager to demonstrate what they have learned, whether on tests or in some other arena. QEI Students are eager and capable of demonstrating their academic progress, one-on-one, and in Assemblies, including our Spring Open House Program and Graduation Exercises.
